Flag Burning Bullshit Burns Me Up

"It's time to stand up for our symbol. I consider defecating on the flag, urinating on the flag, burning the flag with contempt -- just to mention three -- to be offensive conduct, not speech."
-- Sen. Orrin G. Hatch, R-Utah

Holy Crap.

We have thousands of people DYING in a war that is more controversial than any war we have ever fought in history (though it gets less coverage than the Michael Jackson case), and the only things you Republicans can find to do is cut funding for the Corporation for Public Broadcasting and rewriting the constitution to ban flag burning.

Sir, with all due respect, I submit that there are plenty of laws already in place to protect us from people defacating or urinating on anything in public, let alone a flag...and if they defacate or urinate on a flag, there's likely to be people taking pictures and cops right there, and enough witnesses to make sure they pay their debt to the society they are protesting. As to "burning with contempt"....careful there, Senator, you're starting to sound like a Liberal Democrat with your desire to legislate against hate crimes. Or is it better to hate people (like gays and blacks) than it is to hate an inanimate object (flags, for example.)?

Ok, jack asses, how about this? Instead of putting the enormous amount of effort it would take to add an amendment to the Constitution which would limit our freedom to express an opinion (I know, Constititutional Amendments that limit freedom are the only kind you guys get fired up about), how about instead you work your asses off to create the kind of country people are not angry enough at to express that opinion by burning the flag.

Who burns flags anymore anyway? As speech goes, it isn't the most effective expression of anger you can make. Most people who burn flags are in other countries. Or do you think a Constitutional Amendment will allow you to go over and toss their asses in jail for doing it?

Uh, got news for you, you already do that.

Ok, I'm burning a flag in my mind, right now. Jesus says that is as bad as burning a flag in real life.

I'm also voting for a Democrat in my mind right now. And also in my mind I am loving Jesus, how is that for a contradiction likely to blow your tiny mind?

Stop trying to legislate morality and your personal political belief system. Convert me, don't persecute me. You know, like Jesus did.

Who are you people kidding about being patriotic freedom loving Christian Americans?

Oh, yeah. Yourselves.

On the other hand, this could be seen as a good thing. The Repbublicans only trot out shit like this Flag Burning thing, and the Marriage Amendment when their numbers are slipping in the polls and they want to shore up their base of people who don't care about anything but flag waving and making sure dudes don't kiss dudes.

I'd call a liberal democrat soldier the same thing I'd call a conservative republican one.

A role model and a hero. I'm not sure what your point is, there, Phoenix.

I got no problem with the troops as a whole. And I know there are a lot of soldiers out there who think that support in the form of making sure their lives aren't wasted over bad intelligence and political gain would mean a lot more than thousands of yellow magnets plastered on cars just under W stickers.

Ask these soldiers what kind of country they are willing to die for. I'm betting you they'd say they are willing to die to jeeo us free....regardless of their party affiliation.....so, why are the Republicans working so hard to limit the freedoms that these brave kids are dying to protect?

What is the bigger affront to their sacrifice? A burnt flag or curtailing our constitutionally guarenteed freedoms?
